What are Crowns and why do we need them?
Dental crowns can be prescribed for esthetics or function. An esthetic crown will improve the look of your teeth. A functional crown is typically recommended when the natural tooth has lost its ability to function fully due to many fillings, wear and tear or other trauma. A dental crown typically made from zirconia, gold or ceramic replaces your tooth’s natural crown and allows you to retain the roots and base of your natural teeth.
The process typically involves 2 appointments. In the first appointment, the dentist will prepare the tooth so the crown or “cap” fits perfectly on top. Once prepared, we will take impressions to send to the lab and make you a temporary crown while the permanent one is made. Approximately 2-3 weeks after your crown prep appointment, you will come back to have your permanent crown inserted and cemented.
This process restores full function and enables you to keep as much of your natural tooth as possible.
