The term “cavity” in a dental context is often associated with feelings of uncertainty and fear. Often, this is due to lack of knowledge about the underlying causality. Cavities or “caries” as they are referred to by dentists are caused by bacteria and biofilm but influenced by a myriad of factors including diet, saliva and other factors which can vary from person to person.
Bacteria in the mouth is present for all of us shortly after birth, but only certain types of bacteria are known for causing infection leading to a cavity. Some of us are more prone to this bad bacteria than others and it can lead to the loss of hard dental mineral tissue.
A “filling” is the process of restoring either function or aesthetic to the tooth. It can involve removing the infection (caries) from a tooth or simply change the way a tooth looks or feels. Dr. Ben’s approach involves talking through the procedure with the patient beforehand and restoring it in a way such that all infection (if present) is removed, the tooth looks good and your bite feels great.
Dental caries don’t always present with pain or symptoms immediately, but if left unattended they can progress through the outer layer of enamel and this could lead to infection, pain and other unintended consequences. In severe cases, the infected tooth may need to be extracted. This is why it is important to visit the dentist for regular checkups. Modern x-ray imaging can show Dentists infection that is asymptomatic and early detection can head off pain and other unpleasant consequences on your teeth and overall oral health.
